Pacific Group Wealth Management / HollisWealth Summer 2018

Happy Summer! Thank you for being wonderful clients, business associates and friends!

Market Performance:

The “buy anything now, ask questions later” trend we saw in the capital markets in 2017 continued into 2018, although it lasted for less than a month. The sentiment was short-lived this year as substantial volatility returned in February and rocked investor confidence. For perspective, there were only four days in 2017 that the U.S. equity market, represented by the S&P 500 Index, lost 1% or more. In contrast, in the first three months of 2018 alone, the index chalked up 11 days of comparable losses.

Arguably, during the first quarter investors had a difficult time embracing Canadian assets amid uncertainty about the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which has significant repercussions for the Canadian economy. Canadian stocks generally under-performed in the first three months and the Canadian dollar depreciated against major currencies despite the Bank of Canada’s rate hike in January.

Back Office Update:

Our back office change from Scotia Capital Inc. to Industrial Alliance Securities Inc. took place in August 2017. A couple recent changes are digital signatures and our online platform, My Portfolio Plus, where you can view your accounts online.

1. Digital Signatures: Our office wants to become more ecofriendly by using less paper and we have been transitioning to a more digital and paperless platform. In the new year, we begun using a new system called ‘Onboarding – Agreement Express’ to digitally sign new account packages and account update packages.

IA Securities is continuously working to improve the Onboarding system to ensure a smooth, user friendly process. If you have any questions regarding a digital package that has been sent to you for your signature, please contact us and we will be happy to walk you through the digital signing process.

2. Online Access: My Portfolio Plus is our online platform where you can view your accounts online. My Portfolio Plus now includes a more user friendly interface and access to more current account information. It also includes an account selector tool that enables custom account viewing of multiple accounts. If you have not signed up for My Portfolio Plus and wish to, please call Candice at the office. If you have already signed up, please use the website below with your username and password: myportfolioplus.ca/hollis/login

The first two quarters of 2018 point to a year of  milestones.  We began the year as a sponsor for the Taste the World event benefiting hospitals in South East Asia. In May, we won the ‘Most Successful Team Charity Campaign’ and ‘Top Team’ at the 6th annual Diamond Rally. There were over 40 Faith Hope Love decaled Lamborghinis raising $30,000 for Correctol Cancer Surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Humbolt Diamond Rally

May 5, 2018 marked the 6th Annual Diamond Rally benefiting over 20 charities, and one we've worked closely with for years: Faith Hope Love through St. Paul’s Hospital, which raises funds for Colorectal Cancer Surgery.

The total amount raised for Faith Hope Love was $30,000. Donations went towards helping Dr. Raval and his colleagues at St. Paul’s Hospital acquire a state-of-the-art system called ICG Fluorescence Angiography, which allows the best possible intestinal reconstruction in colorectal cancer surgery, and saves lives by reducing complications.  This next-level technology will be a game-changer for patients.

Our Team was honoured to have won ‘Most Successful Team Charity Campaign’ and ‘Top Team’ - Lamborghini Vancouver.

The first half of 2018 also seem to point to a year of personal milestones in our life as well. We took KJ to see his most beloved animal, the Giant Panda at the San Diego Zoo and while there reconnected with a Karma Foundation co-member. KJ also visited Mustique with us for the first time. Mustique is a very unique and special place to Leanne and I as it is where we were engaged, where we honeymooned and can now share as a family.

At Spring Break, we did our annual trip to Cabo San Lucas aboard the Komokwa where we swam in awe with 50ft whale sharks and frisky sea lions! For my birthday, I was surprised with a tour through some of Napa’s most beautiful vineyards.

In June, we will celebrate Lukas Lundin’s 60th birthday, followed by the wedding of one of my closest friends and fellow adviser, James Brown.

It is also with great sadness that we remember friends and clients who have passed on, both young and old. It makes me pause to remember my motto “No wasted days.”

Insurance Advisor | Hollis Insurance Agency

For Mike and his family the last few months can be summed up in a single word- sports.  With two boys aged 6 and 8 that seem to be following in the same footsteps as their sports obsessed Dad, it seems like every night and most weekends have been spent at the ball park, the soccer pitch or the basketball court.  Mike is coaching his oldest son Dane’s baseball team and helping out with hoops squad, while Kelly is helping coach Kobyn’s baseball and getting them all back and forth to soccer as well.

They did however manage to squeeze in a few times where they weren’t chasing kids around a field.  Kelly and Mike got to spend some much needed days in the sun visiting Palm Springs.   Technically, it was a work trip with educational seminars every day but they managed to sneak away for some pool time.  Mike also was privileged to be among the sponsors of the Party for a Purpose, raising funds to support the Grace Orphanage in the Congo.  To be part of supporting a great organization in a war torn country, even in a small way, really was amazing.  The party was pretty good too!

Kelly completed her yoga teacher training and can be found teaching at Oxygen Yoga and Fitness in North Nanaimo.  Kelly credits fitness and activity as one of the biggest contributing factors to her getting through chemo and radiation during her treatment.  To be able to pass along that gift to others is something she holds very close to her heart.

Just this past weekend Mike and one of his clients spent the day at Wildplay Nanaimo, where their families tried some more extreme activities.  How many financial advisors go bungee jumping with their clients?  Of course we made sure everyone’s insurance was up to date first!  The older boys did some zip lining instead as they are still a little young to be jumping off a bridge.

The sports should wind down over the next couple weeks as school lets out so Mike and his family can spend the summer outside and taking advantage of this beautiful spot we call home!

Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager

Carolyn has enjoyed learning so much and getting to know many of our wonderful clients this past year and a half. She is excited to continue growing and expanding her knowledge in the world of finance.

This past year has been full of wonderful life changes for Carolyn and her family. She and Marvin purchased their first home and moved in in February. They have been spending a lot of time making the place their own by completely repainting inside the house, building a deck and re-landscaping.

Marvin and Carolyn and their daughter Atarah are also excited to announce that their family is growing. They are expecting a baby boy who should arrive at the beginning of September. Carolyn will continue to work through to the middle of August.

Carolyn is expecting a lot of visits from family over the summer and into the fall after the baby arrives. She looks forward to enjoying summer here on this beautiful island and preparing for the new addition to their happy family.

Candice has also spent time playing tennis with her Mom and brother, hiking around the Nanaimo area and spending time with friends.

PGWM Christmas Letter 2017

Pacific Group Wealth Management / HollisWealth Christmas 2017

Happy Holidays! Thank you for being wonderful clients, business associates and friends! It has been a pleasure working with you for another year.

The big event for our office this past year has been a transition from Scotia Capital to Industrial Alliance. Change brings new opportunities and new challenges and I want to thank Carolyn, Candice and Mike for all their extra efforts in making the change as smooth as possible. 2017 was a strong year for investment performance across all asset classes with the bull market continuing to march higher. I believe now is the time for increased diversification and have been actively managing portfolios with this goal in mind.

2017 has also seen the passing of friends as well as challenging times for friends and clients. It’s during these times that I gain further confidence in the importance of the work we do and the direct impact it has on our clients and their family’s lives. It reinforces my commitment to long term investment and insurance planning for the families we work with. I am very proud of my team and our combined efforts to transform PGWM into a socially conscious business.

Back Office Change:

Our back office change from Scotia Bank to Industrial Alliance Securities took place in August. The transition has been good for us and yet challenging at times. We have spent many hours learning new programs and systems and feel very confident using our new programs. The only change you will notice is your statements and online platform to view your accounts. Everything else has remained the same.

Our office is looking forward to several positive developments to come.

1.   New Statements: You will have received new monthly statements from Industrial Alliance Securities for August, September & October. We realize these new statements may be a bit hard to read and understand.  We are happy to announce a few new changes to these statements.

Industrial Alliance will be adding color and better paper quality. There is also discussion around possibly changing the formatting of the statement. However, these new statements still have all of the elements of our previous Scotia statements. Please let us know your thoughts on the new statement and pass on any recommendations if you have any.

Also, if you would rather receive your statements electronically please let us know and we will set that up for you.

2.   Online Access: Our Online platform to view your accounts online, My Portfolio+, will be improving in the coming months.

The improvements will include a more user friendly interface and access to more current account information. It will also include an account selector tool that will enable custom account viewing of multiple accounts and accounts of others in the household. You can also now login on your phone by simply going to www.my-portfolio.ca and entering your username and password.

If you have not signed up to My Portfolio+ and you wish to, please call Carolyn or Candice at the office.

Ride to Conquer Cancer Donation

One of our clients participated in this year’s BC Ride to Conquer Cancer at the end of August. On his behalf we made donation to the BC Cancer Foundation. Almost 2,000 riders took place in this event bringing in over $8.3 million for the BC Cancer Foundation!

kingsnorth.jpg

Dear Pacific Group Wealth Management I HollisWealth,

Thank you very much for your generous donation to the Ride to Conquer Cancer ® Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals ® benefiting BC Cancer Foundation.

On behalf of the BC Cancer Foundation, we thank you for supporting cancer research and treatment through The Ride to Conquer Cancer ®. It is through the support of people like you that we can ensure that the BC Cancer Agency remains a place of ground-breaking research and patient care.

James Butler

It is with tremendous sadness to report that James Butler passed away in October. If you attended our event in February you would have heard James speak on the importance of being your authentic self, bringing intention to everything that you do, and truly living each day as if it were your last. We hope that you can practice that today and throughout the Christmas season. He was an incredible man and will be missed by so many.

Darren Pedersen, Senior Investment Advisor

Personally 2017 has felt like 10 great years all squeezed into one! The first half of the year was a lot of “firsts” and travels of a lifetime. A birthday trip on Super Yacht Savannah with great friends and a family trip to Leanne’s sisters home in Cabo. During the summer KJ went to Germany for soccer camp and we met up with him for a trip to the Swedish Archipelago.  Stockholm is a gorgeous city and the archipelago, with its 18 degree water and 100 degree saunas, was quite the memorable experience. KJ returned back to Mainz, Germany for soccer camp and Leanne and I revisited Ibiza and St Tropez before returning home to a beautiful summer on the west coast.

I absolutely love Christmas and this holiday is set to be extra special as we have organized a complete Pedersen gathering in Whistler early in December as well as seeing Leanne’s family for Christmas Day.

With health and happiness being so elusive, our family code continues to be “No wasted days” and “If not now, then when?”

KJ, Leanne and I wish you all the joy of the holiday spirit this season and throughout 2018. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Mike Schmidt- Associate Investment and Insurance Advisor

The summer of 2017 was a fantastic one for Mike as on top of a very busy and rewarding work schedule he and his family found time to explore many of the wonderful places the Island has to offer.  A lot of time was spent at the new Nanaimo Mountain Bike Park as his oldest son Dane is obsessed with mountain biking.  Now that school has started, things have settled back into a regular schedule with the kids starting grade 1 and 3.  Mike’s youngest son Kobyn has started playing soccer so Mike and Kelly can be found every Saturday standing in the rain watching Kobyn’s games.

The early snow fall has everyone excited to get out to the hills for some skiing.  Looks like this year it will just be Daddy and the boys though as Kelly suffered a broken leg a while back.  She was training for the Victoria Marathon when she had a stress fracture.  Needless to say that was disappointing for her.  She has persevered though and has almost completed her Yoga Teacher Training in spite of being hobbled.

One of the greatest surprises of moving to the Island has been the absolutely great friends and clients that the Schmidt’s have met during their time here.  Thanks to all and have a great Christmas!

Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager

Carolyn began working at PGWM one year ago. She has enjoyed learning so much and getting to know many of our wonderful clients. She is very excited to continue growing and expanding her knowledge in the world of finance. Carolyn is currently working on her Insurance Course and hopes to complete it soon.

This past year Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her husband and four year old daughter. This summer they were able to spend some time visiting family in the wide open lands of Saskatchewan. The heat on the prairies was intense during their stay. Carolyn was also able to enjoy visits from family to the island and was able to take them kayaking, and show them the beautiful place we live. Carolyn is looking forward to enjoying Christmas here on the island with her family and friends. Christmas with a four year old is very exciting!

Candice Hall, Client Services Assistant

It has been a great six months for Candice at PGWM.  She has really enjoyed getting to know many of you and continues to learn new things every day. She has been studying the Life Insurance course over the last month and plans to write the exam by the end of the year.

Candice took a trip to Muskoka in early September to surprise her boyfriend, Graeme, at his family’s cottage. It was hard to hide from him for three weeks, but when she arrived it was clear he had no idea she was coming! In June they also spent a weekend in Tofino with his parent’s and triplet brothers. Candice and Graeme will be spending a week in Toronto over Christmas, although she is nervous about how cold it will be! Day to day Candice has enjoyed running, volunteering and spending time with friends and family.

As PGWM finishes its 23rd year in business, Darren is proud of the work done and very excited for what the future holds. Thank you very much for being our clients and friends.  You are truly the foundation on which our success depends.  As we head into the summer, we look forward to working with you, getting to know you better and striving to continue to earn the right to assist you, your family and friends.

PGWM-HollisWealth Summer 2017

summer

Pacific Group Wealth Management / Hollis Wealth Summer 2017

The first half of 2017 has been surprising, challenging to foresee, yet had an overall positive outlook. A series of unpredictable events took place; the election of President Trump prompting a historic Bull Market & strong economy, rapid technological changes and innovations, and a very long winter!

Our office has also experienced several positive developments in the last two quarters.

Technology:

1.      Zoom: Life these days is fast paced and it seems like there is never enough time in the day.  As a result fitting in time to come down to the office to meet can be difficult.  We recognize this is a common frustration for clients and are happy to announce a solution.

Using Zoom, we can now host online meetings that you can attend from your office, home or on the go using a phone or tablet.  Zoom gives us the ability to have meaningful, face to face meetings anytime, anywhere.  No download needed!  Click below if you would like to check out this program for yourself or your business.

2.      RediNest: Many of you have already had a Razor Retirement Plan prepared for you by the team at PGWM as part of your overall financial plan. RediNest is an extension of this service that allows anyone to get an idea of their Retirement Readiness in a quick and easy to use fashion.  Answer a few questions and a detailed report is sent to you and PGWM.

We would encourage all of you to click the link below and complete the questions.  Share the report with us and we will be in touch with you to start working on creating the retirement you deserve.

 3.      Team Additions: The addition of our newest team member Candice Hall.  Candice joins Pacific Group Wealth Management bringing over a decade of experience in customer service. She completed her Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a finance major from Vancouver Island University in 2014 and is currently enrolling in courses to become an investment and insurance advisor. Having spent the majority of her life in Nanaimo, she could not be happier to be working at a local business. Some of Candice's favorite things include travelling, hiking, eating and preparing vegan/vegetarian foods and reading.

Client Events:

1.      Our first annual Investor Insight Program was held at the Coast Bastion and featured four speakers discussing Mortgage Investing, Benefits of Dividends, using Technical Indicators for market forecasting and a motivational presentation by our keynote speaker James Butler, Retired Navy SEAL. Well attended, the event received tremendous positive feedback and we look forward to bringing additional top rated exclusive speaker series to you in the near future.

2.      Our office was proud to host many of you at the Chantal Kreviazuk Hard Sail Tour concert at the Nanaimo Port Theatre. Chantal is one of my favourite Canadian singers and it was great to experience her live together with many of our clients.

3.      Our office was also pleased to present another one of my entertainment favourites “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Many of us grew up watching the series and to have the pleasure of sharing them with our clients and their children was truly a great event. May The Force be With You!!!!

Events

Community Involvement:

As many of you know, philanthropy is one of the many pillars of the work we do at PGWM.  Our annual Diamond Rally to raise awareness and funds for colon and breast cancer was an overwhelming success. It also reiterated our belief in the “pay it forward” concept of giving. Our charitable involvement in the car rally inspired 23 other groups to raise funds for the charities of their choice at the rally as well!  Thank you to those that supported us in your donations, messages of support and spreading awareness!

Leanne and I also continue to donate our time and resources to run the cancer store online, a resource for cancer patients and the book we wrote for patients with colon cancer “Health the Way Nature Intended”.

PGWM was also involved in Taste The World 2017, a wine tasting event that raised over $100,000 this year and a million to date to support medical and grassroots social development projects in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

PGWM’s most recent activity is with Volunteer Nanaimo. They are hosting an event for families on Father’s Day, June 18th, at Nanaimo North Town Centre. Volunteer Nanaimo ‘Touch-a-Truck’ event is to help support Nanaimo’s Youth Network which offer young people age 11-18 an opportunity to be involved in meaningful, team based and reflective volunteer service.  Please come out and enjoy the fun!

Darren Pedersen, Senior Investment Advisor at PGWM – Hollis Wealth.

The biggest news so far for 2017 has been a strong market performance. I have enjoyed a full work schedule of client meetings and invested time researching current holdings and new opportunities.  Feeling great, leading a healthy lifestyle, Leanne, our son KJ and I were fortunate to be invited to an impromptu “boot camp” by our friend on award winning Savanna in the Virgin Islands. The long winter was broken up by weekends enjoying historically great ski and snowboard conditions at Whistler/Blackcomb. This spring I look forward to starting a new hobby of tennis. My main passion however continues to be meeting with clients, investing, seeing growth and finding the next great opportunity.

Mike Schmidt- Associate Investment and Insurance Advisor

June of 2017 will mark one year since Mike’s family took the plunge and moved from the big city of Vancouver to start their new lives in Nanaimo.  He would like to thank everyone for being so welcoming and for being such a pleasure to work with.  The past year has been great although a busy one as Mike completed everything necessary to officially hang his license here at HollisWealth.  Now that he has all of that behind him, he is excited to be able to work with Darren and the PGWM team to move forward in an advisory role.

On top of all the studying and work, his two boys have been keeping his wife Kelly and him very busy.  The boys are following in their Dad’s footsteps and trying to play every sport they can.  Currently it is baseball season and Mike is having a blast coaching his seven year-olds team.  Go Pirates!  Between the nights at the ball park and the weekends spent exploring what the Island has to offer, the boys are making sure their old dad gets his exercise.

Many of you may not know this but one of the reasons the family made the move to the Island was health related.  Mike’s wife Kelly had just finished chemotherapy when they moved to Nanaimo so this past weekend the family took part in the Nanaimo Relay For Life. It was an incredible honour for Mike to walk beside Kelly during the Survivor lap.  It was inspiring for everyone involved to be around so many others that have battled cancer and won.

This has been a great year for Mike and he is excited to see what the rest of 2017 has in store!

Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager at PGWM – HollisWealth

carolyn

Carolyn began working at PGWM in the new year and has really enjoyed learning so much and getting to know many of our wonderful clients. She is very excited to continue growing and expanding her knowledge in the world of finance. She wants to share with others how to effectively reach their goals of more financial freedom.

Carolyn enjoys spending time with her husband and three year old daughter. She is looking forward to the longer summer days and being able to go camping for the first time with her family. Being from Alberta, Carolyn continues to enjoy the island life all year round.

Candice Hall, Client Services Assistant at PGWM – HollisWealth

candice

Candice joined HollisWealth in May of this year as a Client Services Assistant. She feels very fortunate to have been brought on to work with such a great team!

Growing up in Nanaimo with a single mother, she learned early on the value of a dollar. With several smart decisions and ability to delay gratification her Mom was able to retire at 54 years-old! She taught Candice the importance of saving and investing at a young age and how to squeeze a dollar. Due to learning these lessons so young, Candice decided she wanted to help other people learn about their own finances in a way that would enable them to lessen stress and increase freedom.

Outside of the office you will likely find Candice walking Westwood Lake or the Seawall, or lounging at the Nanaimo river. She also hopes to play some tennis this summer, providing she works on her forehand. When not being active Candice really enjoys reading suspense/thriller books and memoir-type comedies. She is also hoping to get a kitten this summer but her boyfriend doesn't know that yet.

Candice greatly looks forward to introducing herself to many of you in the upcoming months.

As PGWM beings its 23rd summer in business, Darren is proud of the work done and very excited for what the future holds. Thank you very much for being our clients and friends.  You are truly the foundation on which our success depends.  As we head into the summer, we look forward to working with you, getting to know you better and striving to continue to earn the right to assist you, your family and friends.

Warmest Regards,

Darren, Mike, Carolyn & Candice

JAMES BUTLER | RECLAIMING WARRIOR

“Reclaiming Your Inner Warrior”

Fear is a language James Butler, speaks fluently. As an elite military diver and Afghanistan veteran, he’s often rubbed elbows with death – and after a life-threatening injury, his world crumbled. In one foul swoop, his marriage, career and military brotherhood faded into the distance. James had two choices: take the desk job he was offered and wait out retirement, or say hell no and create a badass legacy. With a napkin and a sharpie, James sketched his extraordinary vision. Today, reclaiming warrior works with world-leading mavericks choosing hell no in service of hell yes.

JAMES BUTLER | RECLAIMING WARRIOR

“Reclaiming Your Inner Warrior”

James Butler is an expert in redesigning and reinventing human potential. He got a taste for human development and pushing the limits of possibility when he aligned himself with some the toughest humans on earth in elite military units. Through a tour in Afghanistan as bomb-disposal and onto a career in tactical military diving, James’ life has trained him well. From the beginning, James saw the members of the elite brotherhoods push past limits both in the physical and mental. Inspired, James looked for ways to consistently push his own potential and remove the boundaries.

After suffering a near-fatal military training diving accident, James found himself fighting for his life as he watched his body crumble under the immense medical battle that followed. Finding himself a skeleton of the man he was before, he set to recreate, reinvent, and redefine his own legacy.

With his body no longer able to withstand the physical pressures of Operational Diving, James sought a new medium to use his gifts, passion, and talent in high-level, high-stress scenarios. He decided to invent his own path.

James set off to design a company that would include all the aspects of warrior development and brotherhood-like community that he valued so highly in the tight-knit community of the military. Seeing a need for focus and attention on high achievers aligning themselves more with a mission than just profit alone, he revolutionized the personal development industry by combining deep inner work and outer, fear-facing adventure-based experiential training. Thus, Reclaiming Warrior was born. From the ashes of one dream sprouted the life of a passion that burned stronger than ever.

“Reclaiming Warrior is a mission-driven personal & professional development company that supports high-influence executives, rising entrepreneurs, and fast growing visionary companies to achieve their extraordinary projects and realize impossible visions. By transforming the core of an individual or company through the practice of deep inner work, experiential-submersion training, and diverse personal/professional mastery techniques, we drive unprecedented results. Dream bigger, Leap forward, experience the greatness of all that is possible.”

Clients of Reclaiming Warrior include Fortune 500 CEOs, rising maverick entrepreneurs, Special Forces Operators, global-impacting financial firms, high-influence leaders involved in deals worth more than $1 billion, environmental political change-agents, leaders in education, college professors, and many more, all united by one pursuit- “showing up as the greatest version of themselves.”

James’ latest project is the Warrior Master Class- A Leader’s Community

A tribe of high-performing, like-minded leaders with unique perspectives from all areas of life. In this exclusive mastermind-style group, James is combining the powerful forces of Elite Military Soldiers, maverick entrepreneurs, and influential executive leaders. Together, we are creating a fulfilling, result-focused brotherhood whose aim is to act as a select group of high-achieving leaders producing unprecedented results in uncommon ways. Members learn warrior mindset principles from our monthly guest teachers, network and impact global strategy, while also acting as a private board of advisors for each member. It’s our belief that if you have a massive mission, we want you to get all the tools you need.
