Pacific Group Wealth Management / HollisWealth Christmas 2017
Happy Holidays! Thank you for being wonderful clients, business associates and friends! It has been a pleasure working with you for another year.
The big event for our office this past year has been a transition from Scotia Capital to Industrial Alliance. Change brings new opportunities and new challenges and I want to thank Carolyn, Candice and Mike for all their extra efforts in making the change as smooth as possible. 2017 was a strong year for investment performance across all asset classes with the bull market continuing to march higher. I believe now is the time for increased diversification and have been actively managing portfolios with this goal in mind.
2017 has also seen the passing of friends as well as challenging times for friends and clients. It’s during these times that I gain further confidence in the importance of the work we do and the direct impact it has on our clients and their family’s lives. It reinforces my commitment to long term investment and insurance planning for the families we work with. I am very proud of my team and our combined efforts to transform PGWM into a socially conscious business.
Back Office Change:
Our back office change from Scotia Bank to Industrial Alliance Securities took place in August. The transition has been good for us and yet challenging at times. We have spent many hours learning new programs and systems and feel very confident using our new programs. The only change you will notice is your statements and online platform to view your accounts. Everything else has remained the same.
Our office is looking forward to several positive developments to come.
1. New Statements: You will have received new monthly statements from Industrial Alliance Securities for August, September & October. We realize these new statements may be a bit hard to read and understand. We are happy to announce a few new changes to these statements.
Industrial Alliance will be adding color and better paper quality. There is also discussion around possibly changing the formatting of the statement. However, these new statements still have all of the elements of our previous Scotia statements. Please let us know your thoughts on the new statement and pass on any recommendations if you have any.
Also, if you would rather receive your statements electronically please let us know and we will set that up for you.
2. Online Access: Our Online platform to view your accounts online, My Portfolio+, will be improving in the coming months.
The improvements will include a more user friendly interface and access to more current account information. It will also include an account selector tool that will enable custom account viewing of multiple accounts and accounts of others in the household. You can also now login on your phone by simply going to www.my-portfolio.ca and entering your username and password.
If you have not signed up to My Portfolio+ and you wish to, please call Carolyn or Candice at the office.
As many of you know, philanthropy is one of the many pillars of work we do at PGWM.
We are excited to be doing a Christmas Giveaway this year! We will be giving away two $200 gift cards to the Grotto Spa at Tigh Na Mara. Stop by our office with a new unwrapped toy, or a non-perishable food item, or a client referral that leads to a meeting for your chance to win. We will be giving 3 ballots for referrals that lead to a meeting. The toys will be donated to support the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive and non-perishable food items will be donated to Loaves and Fishes.
The draw will take place LIVE on our Facebook page on Friday, December 22nd at 10am.

This Halloween we teamed up with many other businesses in the Old City Quarter to give out treats to kids (and some adults) on Saturday, October 28th. We decorated the office and gave out treats to over 50 kids!
Taste the World
We are sponsoring Taste the World, a wine tasting charity event happening January 23rd at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver. The net proceeds from this event enable children in Laos and Myanmar to access critical hospital treatment. Proceeds from our last event treated & educated 37,739 children and their families.
If you want to know more about the event or to contribute click HERE or contact us.
Ride to Conquer Cancer Donation
One of our clients participated in this year’s BC Ride to Conquer Cancer at the end of August. On his behalf we made donation to the BC Cancer Foundation. Almost 2,000 riders took place in this event bringing in over $8.3 million for the BC Cancer Foundation!
Dear Pacific Group Wealth Management I HollisWealth,
Thank you very much for your generous donation to the Ride to Conquer Cancer ® Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals ® benefiting BC Cancer Foundation.
On behalf of the BC Cancer Foundation, we thank you for supporting cancer research and treatment through The Ride to Conquer Cancer ®. It is through the support of people like you that we can ensure that the BC Cancer Agency remains a place of ground-breaking research and patient care.
It is with tremendous sadness to report that James Butler passed away in October. If you attended our event in February you would have heard James speak on the importance of being your authentic self, bringing intention to everything that you do, and truly living each day as if it were your last. We hope that you can practice that today and throughout the Christmas season. He was an incredible man and will be missed by so many.
Darren Pedersen, Senior Investment Advisor
Personally 2017 has felt like 10 great years all squeezed into one! The first half of the year was a lot of “firsts” and travels of a lifetime. A birthday trip on Super Yacht Savannah with great friends and a family trip to Leanne’s sisters home in Cabo. During the summer KJ went to Germany for soccer camp and we met up with him for a trip to the Swedish Archipelago. Stockholm is a gorgeous city and the archipelago, with its 18 degree water and 100 degree saunas, was quite the memorable experience. KJ returned back to Mainz, Germany for soccer camp and Leanne and I revisited Ibiza and St Tropez before returning home to a beautiful summer on the west coast.
I absolutely love Christmas and this holiday is set to be extra special as we have organized a complete Pedersen gathering in Whistler early in December as well as seeing Leanne’s family for Christmas Day.
With health and happiness being so elusive, our family code continues to be “No wasted days” and “If not now, then when?”
KJ, Leanne and I wish you all the joy of the holiday spirit this season and throughout 2018. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Mike Schmidt- Associate Investment and Insurance Advisor
The summer of 2017 was a fantastic one for Mike as on top of a very busy and rewarding work schedule he and his family found time to explore many of the wonderful places the Island has to offer. A lot of time was spent at the new Nanaimo Mountain Bike Park as his oldest son Dane is obsessed with mountain biking. Now that school has started, things have settled back into a regular schedule with the kids starting grade 1 and 3. Mike’s youngest son Kobyn has started playing soccer so Mike and Kelly can be found every Saturday standing in the rain watching Kobyn’s games.
The early snow fall has everyone excited to get out to the hills for some skiing. Looks like this year it will just be Daddy and the boys though as Kelly suffered a broken leg a while back. She was training for the Victoria Marathon when she had a stress fracture. Needless to say that was disappointing for her. She has persevered though and has almost completed her Yoga Teacher Training in spite of being hobbled.
One of the greatest surprises of moving to the Island has been the absolutely great friends and clients that the Schmidt’s have met during their time here. Thanks to all and have a great Christmas!
Carolyn Nnadiekwe, Client Service Manager
Carolyn began working at PGWM one year ago. She has enjoyed learning so much and getting to know many of our wonderful clients. She is very excited to continue growing and expanding her knowledge in the world of finance. Carolyn is currently working on her Insurance Course and hopes to complete it soon.
This past year Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her husband and four year old daughter. This summer they were able to spend some time visiting family in the wide open lands of Saskatchewan. The heat on the prairies was intense during their stay. Carolyn was also able to enjoy visits from family to the island and was able to take them kayaking, and show them the beautiful place we live. Carolyn is looking forward to enjoying Christmas here on the island with her family and friends. Christmas with a four year old is very exciting!
Candice Hall, Client Services Assistant
It has been a great six months for Candice at PGWM. She has really enjoyed getting to know many of you and continues to learn new things every day. She has been studying the Life Insurance course over the last month and plans to write the exam by the end of the year.
Candice took a trip to Muskoka in early September to surprise her boyfriend, Graeme, at his family’s cottage. It was hard to hide from him for three weeks, but when she arrived it was clear he had no idea she was coming! In June they also spent a weekend in Tofino with his parent’s and triplet brothers. Candice and Graeme will be spending a week in Toronto over Christmas, although she is nervous about how cold it will be! Day to day Candice has enjoyed running, volunteering and spending time with friends and family.
As PGWM finishes its 23rd year in business, Darren is proud of the work done and very excited for what the future holds. Thank you very much for being our clients and friends. You are truly the foundation on which our success depends. As we head into the summer, we look forward to working with you, getting to know you better and striving to continue to earn the right to assist you, your family and friends.
