This week, Leanne and I saw firsthand how a small act of giving can have a positively massive, ripple effect.
We met with my surgeon Dr Manoj Raval of St. Paul’s Hospital to unveil the Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) Insufflator, which we raised money for at last year's Diamond Car Rally through our Faith Hope and Love decals. Three major leaps in healthcare were made with your donation:
- First, instead of being cut open from sternum to pelvis, the surgeons can now work endoscopically one from the top and one from the bottom creating only a small incision, making recovery a fraction of what mine was.
- Second, two surgeons can operate in tandem for 20 to 30 minutes instead of operating independently for 3 hours.
- Third, the TEM Insufflator has enabled them to DOUBLE the number of surgeries like mine - surgeries where the colostomy bag is reversible which is so impactful on quality of life I have no words to explain. This has also shortened surgery wait times in our province by 50%.
When I think of how many lives this act of giving has impacted and improved, I'm motivated to continue to raise awareness of the importance of early detection in beating cancer and funds for equipment that will make a real difference. Thank you to all of you who donated to make this happen and please watch for a new opportunity to give back again in the near future.
